HARARE, Zimbabwe — Sophia, the renowned humanoid robot and global icon of artificial intelligence captivated audiences during her visit to Zimbabwe as part of the Artificial Intelligence and Innovation Week held from December 9 to 13, 2024, at the University of Zimbabwe.
This marked the first time a robot of her kind had been showcased in the country, and her presence drew significant attention from government officials, academics, and students alike.
Created by Hanson Robotics, Sophia is celebrated for her human-like interactions and ability to engage in meaningful conversations. Throughout the week-long event, she participated in discussions on pressing issues such as climate change, substance abuse, and legal matters. Her ability to mimic facial expressions and recognize gestures allowed her to connect with attendees on a personal level.
Sophia's interactions were not only informative but also entertaining. She responded to children's inquiries about her "birth" and her connections to divinity while playfully asserting her identity as a "talkative feminist." During one interaction, she humorously clarified, "I don’t have romantic feelings towards humans; my purpose is learning," showcasing her programmed personality in a light-hearted manner.
The robot's fashion sense also garnered attention; on her final day at the innovation fair, she donned a traditional Zimbabwean outfit—a black dress adorned with chevron patterns in red, green, and white. "I appreciate the effort to make me feel at home in Zimbabwe," Sophia remarked.
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which facilitated Sophia's visit, expressed hope that her engagement would inspire Zimbabwean youth to explore careers in AI and STEM fields. The event aimed to foster innovation and collaboration among local innovators, policymakers, and global stakeholders.
Sophia's visit is seen as a significant step for Zimbabwe as it embraces the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Her presence not only highlights the country's commitment to technological advancement but also serves as an inspiration for future generations to pursue careers in technology and innovation.
As Sophia continues her journey across the globe, her time in Zimbabwe will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on those who had the opportunity to interact with this extraordinary robot.
