The nominations for the 2024 Billboard Music Awards have highlighted the rising popularity of African music around the world. Notable artists from Africa, including Nigerian musicians Asake, Tems, Rema, and Burna Boy, as well as South African star Tyla, have received nominations in a new category dedicated to Afrobeats music.

The 2024 Billboard Music Awards (BBMAs) have made history by recognizing the growing influence of African music on the global stage, with several prominent artists from the continent securing nominations in key categories. For the first time, the BBMAs have introduced an Afrobeats category, highlighting the genre's increasing popularity worldwide. The nominees for Top Afrobeats Artist include Nigerian stars Asake, Burna Boy, Rema, and Tems, alongside South African sensation Tyla.

In the Top Afrobeats Song category, strong contenders include Tems with "Me & U" and Tyla with three entries: "Water," "Truth or Dare," and "Jump" (featuring Gunna and Skillibeng). Tyla leads the Afrobeats nominations with an impressive total of eight nods, marking her as a rising star in the international music scene.

The 2024 Billboard Music Awards, hosted by actress and comedian Michelle Buteau, will air live on December 12 at 8 PM ET/PT. The show will be broadcast on Fox and will also be available on Paramount+ and Fire TV Channels, marking a first-of-its-kind multi-platform viewing experience.

While African artists dominate the Afrobeats categories, the overall nominations are led by Taylor Swift with 17 entries across 16 categories. Drake and Kendrick Lamar follow with eight nominations each.

This recognition represents a significant moment for African music, particularly Afrobeats, on the global stage. It follows years of growing international appeal and chart success for artists from the continent. The inclusion of Afrobeats categories and the strong showing of African nominees underscore the genre's impact on the global music industry and its potential for further growth.

The 2024 BBMAs serve as a testament to the rising influence of African music and its artists on the international music scene, paving the way for greater recognition and opportunities in the future.
