San Diego FC has confirmed Nigerian Grammy-winning artist Tems (born Temilade Openiyi) as its newest co-owner via her company The Leading Vibe, solidifying the MLS expansion team’s ties to global music and African entrepreneurship. The deal, facilitated through Pave Investments—a Lagos-based private equity firm with stakes in NBA Africa—marks Tems’ second major sports investment.
Tems joins actress Issa Rae and former footballer Juan Mata in SDFC’s ownership group, with Pave Investments Chairman Tunde Folawiyo and Founding Director Kwamena Afful also securing stakes.
The partnership aims to leverage her cultural influence to enhance the club’s community-driven initiatives, including its youth-focused Right to Dream Academy.
“Sports and music both break barriers,” Tems stated. “This isn’t just about soccer—it’s about creating opportunities that resonate from San Diego to Lagos.” SDFC CEO Tom Penn highlighted her “unique ability to bridge continents through art,” aligning with the club’s February 2025 MLS debut against LA Galaxy.
The singer, known for her Oscar-nominated work on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and the 2023 Grammy win, expands her portfolio amid a growing crossover between entertainment and sports ownership.
San Diego FC, backed by Egypt’s Mansour Group, opens its Snapdragon Stadium on March 1 against St. Louis CITY SC.
