Teddy Osei, the visionary Ghanaian saxophonist and founder of the influential Afro-rock band Osibisa, passed away on January 14, 2025, at 88. Born in Kumasi in 1937, Osei's journey from local church bands to international stardom revolutionized the global music scene. As the driving force behind Osibisa, he blended African rhythms with rock, jazz, and soul.
Born in December 1937 in Kumasi, Ghana, Osei's musical journey began at a young age, influenced by his father's involvement in local church bands. His passion for music flourished during his college years in Sekondi, where he formed his first band, “The Comets”.
In 1962, Osei relocated to London on a government scholarship to study music and drama. This move proved pivotal, leading to the formation of Osibisa in 1969, a band that would revolutionize the music scene by blending African rhythms with rock, soul, and jazz.
Osibisa's unique sound catapulted them to international fame in the 1970s. Under Osei's leadership, the band achieved chart success in the UK with hits like "Sunshine Day" and “Dance the Body Music”. Their electrifying performances captivated audiences worldwide, including a notable appearance alongside Bob Marley and the Wailer.
Osei's impact extended far beyond his music. He is credited with paving the way for other African artists, including Fela Kuti, and instilling confidence in African musicians on the global stage. His commitment to showcasing African music internationally left an indelible mark on the music industry.
Teddy Osei's passing was confirmed by Bessa Simons, President of the Musicians Union of Ghana (GHAMRO). He is survived by his two daughters, Matilda and Shanta Osei.
As we bid farewell to this musical giant, we celebrate a life dedicated to breaking barriers and uniting people through the universal language of music. Teddy Osei's innovative spirit and cultural contributions will continue to inspire generations of musicians and music lovers alike.
