Zaria Court Kigali Officially Opens as a Transformative Hub for African Sports and Culture

A living symbol of resilience and progress, Zaria Court Kigali blends sports, creativity, and community to reimagine urban life in Africa. Backed by Masai Ujiri and the Rwandan government, it’s more than a venue—it’s a vision for Africa’s future.

Zaria Court Kigali, officially inaugurated on July 28, 2025, stands as a landmark achievement in African urban development. This pioneering mixed-use complex seamlessly weaves together sports, culture, commerce, and community empowerment—setting a new standard for infrastructure across the continent.

Spearheaded by Masai Ujiri—President of the Toronto Raptors and Founder of Giants of Africa—in collaboration with the Rwandan government and designed by the acclaimed architecture firm NLÉ, Zaria Court is the flagship development of Kigali Sports City. More than a venue, it is a vision: one that honors Rwanda’s past while shaping Africa’s future.

A Site of Memory, A Platform for Progress
The site is steeped in history. Once a modernist building used by the United Nations during the 1994 Genocide and later repurposed for the COVID-19 response, the structure has been thoughtfully transformed through adaptive reuse. The original concrete frame has been preserved, while local materials bring new life to the space, offering a contemporary African design that is both tactile and symbolic. It stands as a living monument to resilience, memory, and rebirth.

A Multifaceted Urban Hub

Zaria Court is more than architecture—it’s an ecosystem designed to empower and inspire. Key features include:

A four-star boutique hotel with 80 rooms, merging modern comfort and cultural ambiance

Multipurpose courts and five-a-side football pitches encourage sports participation

A 2,000-seat event center for concerts, screenings, fashion shows, and cultural events

Lifestyle amenities include a gym, wellness center, pool deck, sports bar, and "The Jaro" rooftop lounge

Creative and entrepreneurial spaces, such as podcast studios, co-working areas, conference rooms, and a stacked-container retail park, are nurturing local businesses—particularly youth- and women-led ventures

Public parks and playgrounds are landscaped with native flora to foster community interaction and safe, intergenerational play

Strategically located near BK Arena, Amahoro Stadium, Kimironko Market, and the Kigali Convention Centre, Zaria Court reinforces Kigali’s vision as a regional hub for sports and entertainment.

Already, the project has created nearly 500 jobs and is poised to stimulate long-term economic growth, social inclusion, and civic pride.

A Celebration of African Vision
The grand opening was marked by an inspiring ceremony led by Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Masai Ujiri. Both leaders emphasized the transformative power of African-led development and the role of sports in fostering unity, dignity, and opportunity.

“Zaria Court is proof of what happens when talent meets vision, and when Africans invest in Africans,” said Ujiri. President Kagame echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of infrastructure that uplifts, connects, and empowers.

A Model for the Continent
Zaria Court Kigali is not just a building—it’s a movement. It represents a reimagining of what public space can be in Africa: sustainable, inclusive, and inspired by community. By blending civic memory with innovation, it sets a powerful precedent for other African cities.

In the words of its creators, this is a space for Africa, by Africa—built not just to impress, but to impact. Zaria Court is a blueprint for the continent’s renaissance, where sports, entrepreneurship, culture, and community converge to shape a shared and vibrant future.
