Uganda’s Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has been confirmed as the duly elected president of the country following a ruling by the Supreme Court of Uganda , which upheld his win in the January 15, 2026, presidential election after a legal challenge was withdrawn, multiple credible sources reported.
A panel of nine justices, led by Chief Justice Flavian Zeija, unanimously granted an application allowing former presidential candidate Robert Kasibante to withdraw his petition challenging the election outcome, according to court records.
The petition, lodged under Presidential Election Petition No. 1 of 2026, sought to nullify Museveni’s victory on grounds of alleged irregularities and sought access to a forensic analysis of electronic voting and biometric data. Kasibante later cited financial and logistical barriers to pursuing the evidence required, prompting the withdrawal request.
By permitting the withdrawal and finding no other valid legal challenge, the Supreme Court formally confirmed Museveni’s re-election under the Presidential Elections Act, declaring him the duly elected president for another term in office.
While the bench was unanimous on confirmation of the election result, there was a split on the question of legal costs, with one judge dissenting on the issue of cost liability against the petitioner.
Kasibante’s petition was the only outstanding legal challenge following the declaration of results by the Electoral Commission (Uganda) , which had previously announced Museveni as the winner with a decisive vote share.
The Supreme Court decision effectively ends formal judicial contestation of the presidential results, confirming Museveni’s victory in the general election.
The confirmation by Uganda’s top court formalises a contested electoral outcome that was initially challenged on legal grounds. Museveni’s re-election continues a multi-decade tenure at the helm of Uganda’s leadership, reinforcing his position following competitive national polls.
WHAT’S NEXT
With the Supreme Court’s ruling concluding the only pending legal dispute, Museveni is expected to proceed with preparations for his next term in office, having secured judicial reinforcement of the official vote outcome.
