Tems Launches Leading Vibe to Empower Young African Women in Music

Tems' Leading Vibe helps young African women in the music industry by providing guidance, building their skills, and creating a supportive community.

Lagos, Nigeria – July 2025
Award-winning Nigerian singer-songwriter Tems has launched Leading Vibe, a mentorship and empowerment initiative to support young African women in music. The program aims to combat gender inequality in the industry and inspire a new generation of female African artists.

Tems, known for her global hits and collaborations with artists like Wizkid, Drake, and Beyoncé, announced the initiative at a press event in Lagos. “Leading Vibe is about creating opportunities for young women who are passionate about music but face barriers to entry,” Tems said. “We’re not waiting for permission—we’re building our platforms and supporting each other.”

The initiative will offer mentorship programs, music production workshops, networking events, and access to industry professionals. While based in Nigeria, Leading Vibe is open to aspiring female musicians from across Africa, with plans for regional chapters in cities such as Accra, Lusaka, and Johannesburg.

Industry experts have praised the move as a significant step toward closing the gender gap in African music. Despite the continent’s booming music scene, women remain underrepresented in production, management, and headline festival slots. “There’s no shortage of talent—just a lack of access and support,” said Ghanaian producer Amaarae, who is collaborating with Leading Vibe on its first round of workshops.

Tems’ initiative comes at a time when African genres like Afrobeats, Amapiano, and Afro-pop are dominating global charts, yet women artists often struggle for visibility and leadership roles. By focusing on mentorship and community-building, Leading Vibe aims to change that narrative.

“Leading Vibe isn’t just about inspiration—it’s about action,” Tems emphasized. “We want young women to know they can shape the future of African music, not just be a part of it.”

Applications for the first cohort of Leading Vibe mentees open in August 2025, with the program set to launch in Lagos and expand to other African cities by the end of the year.
