Mohamed Salah Signs New Contract: Cementing His Legacy at Anfield

Mohamed Salah has signed a two-year contract extension with Liverpool, keeping him at Anfield until the summer of 2027.

The announcement on April 11, 2025, ended months of speculation about his future and reaffirmed his status as one of the greatest players in Liverpool’s illustrious history. With this deal, Salah is set to complete a decade at the club, a rare feat for any player, let alone an African footballer in Europe’s elite leagues.

Since joining Liverpool from AS Roma in 2017 for £36.9 million, Salah has become synonymous with success at Anfield. His remarkable record of 243 goals in 394 appearances places him third on Liverpool’s all-time scoring list, behind only Ian Rush (346) and Roger Hunt (285). Salah’s consistency has been unparalleled—he is the only player in Liverpool’s history to score 20 or more goals in all competitions for eight consecutive seasons.

This season alone, Salah has delivered one of his finest campaigns yet, scoring 32 goals and providing 22 assists across all competitions. His contributions have propelled Liverpool to an 11-point lead at the top of the Premier League table under manager Arne Slot, with a second league title within reach. Salah is also on track to win his fourth Premier League Golden Boot.

Salah’s influence extends beyond statistics. From his debut season, where he scored a record-breaking 32 Premier League goals, to leading Liverpool to their first league title in 30 years during the 2019/20 season, he has consistently delivered in crucial moments.

His resilience was evident when he bounced back from heartbreak in the 2018 Champions League final to score in the following year’s final, securing Liverpool’s sixth European crown.

The new two-year deal reportedly makes Salah one of the highest earners in world football, with weekly wages exceeding £480,000. This lucrative contract reflects both his immense value to Liverpool and his elite status in global football.

Despite lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia’s Pro League—including a reported £215 million bid from Al Ittihad—Salah chose to remain at Anfield. His decision underscores his commitment to competing at the highest level in Europe rather than prioritizing financial incentives.

The negotiations for this extension were not straightforward. Talks began last November when Salah hinted that he felt “more out than in” regarding his future at Liverpool. However, significant progress was made by March 2025 between Salah’s agent Ramy Abbas Issa and Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes. The final agreement was reached just days before the public announcement.

What This Means for Salah and Liverpool

1. For Salah: This contract extension solidifies his legacy as one of Liverpool’s greatest-ever players and allows him to break more records. With only Roger Hunt and Ian Rush ahead of him on the scoring charts, Salah could realistically finish as Liverpool’s all-time leading scorer if he maintains his current form.

2. For Liverpool: Retaining Salah ensures that the club remains competitive on both domestic and European fronts. His leadership and experience are invaluable for younger players and new signings as Liverpool transitions into a new era under Arne Slot.

3. For African Football: Salah’s decision to stay at Liverpool sends a powerful message about African players’ ability to dominate Europe’s elite leagues over extended periods. His success continues to inspire young footballers across Africa.

Expert Commentary

Arne Slot (Liverpool Manager): “Salah is irreplaceable—not just for his goals but for what he brings to the team every day. His work ethic is unmatched.”
Sami Mokbel (BBC Sport): “This deal is a win-win for both parties. It allows Salah to chase more records while ensuring Liverpool remains a force in world football.”
Alex Keble (Premier League Analyst): “With this extension, Salah has a chance to cement himself not just as Liverpool’s greatest player but also as one of the Premier League’s all-time legends.”

As Salah approaches his 33rd birthday in June 2025, he shows no signs of slowing down. His fitness regimen and dedication have allowed him to maintain peak performance levels well into his thirties—a rarity in modern football. Beyond chasing individual records, Salah remains focused on adding more silverware to his collection with Liverpool.

On the international stage, Salah will lead Egypt into the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Winning a major international trophy remains one of the few accolades missing from his illustrious career.
