African Women in Dialogue (AfWID) Hosts Transformative Conference in Johannesburg

African Women in Dialogue (AfWID) will host a groundbreaking five-day conference in Johannesburg from January 27 to 31, 2025. Under the powerful theme "Women's Voice and Power as Agents of Change," this event aims to amplify the voices of women across the African continent and catalyze meaningful change.

The Women's Development Business Trust (WDB Trust), established in 1991, is organizing the conference for the third time, following successful sessions in 2018 and 2019. The event is expected to draw approximately 1,000 participants from all 55 African nations, representing a diverse cross-section of society, including government officials, entrepreneurs, students, public servants, and activists.

In a significant move towards inclusivity, 60% of the participants will come from marginalized backgrounds, ensuring that grassroots voices are prominently represented. This approach aligns with the conference's goal of fostering a dialogue that spans socioeconomic divides and brings diverse perspectives to the forefront.

The conference agenda is packed with critical discussions on issues affecting women across the continent. Topics will range from gender equality and economic empowerment to healthcare and environmental concerns. Participants will engage in capacity-building initiatives through hands-on workshops and training sessions, designed to equip them with practical skills and knowledge.

A unique feature of this year's conference is the inter-generational panel discussions. These sessions will bring together women born in 1995 and later with those who attended the landmark Beijing Conference in 1995, creating a bridge between different generations of African women leaders and activists.

Riah Phiyega, CEO of WDB Trust, emphasized the significance of the event, stating,

“AfWID 2025 is not just a conference; it's a movement. We're creating a platform where African women can come together, share their experiences, and collectively strategize for a future where their voices are not just heard but are instrumental in shaping policies and driving change.”

The timing of the conference is particularly poignant as it commemorates the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. Participants will reflect on the progress made in gender equality over the past three decades while also charting a course for future milestones.

As the conference unfolds, it is expected to produce a visionary declaration that will be presented at various continental and international forums. This document will encapsulate the collective aspirations and commitments of African women leaders, serving as a roadmap for gender equality initiatives across the continent.

The AfWID conference stands as a testament to the growing influence and determination of African women in addressing the continent's most pressing challenges. From climate change to economic inequality and conflict resolution, the gathering in Johannesburg promises to be a crucible for innovative ideas and transformative action.

As Africa continues to navigate complex social, economic, and political landscapes, the voices and perspectives brought together at AfWID 2025 will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping a more equitable and prosperous future for all Africans.
