Rwanda and Belgium Sever Diplomatic Ties Over DR Congo Conflict

In a dramatic escalation of tensions, Rwanda and Belgium have severed diplomatic relations, each expelling the other's diplomats over disagreements regarding the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Rwanda accused Belgium of using "lies and manipulation" to foster a negative perception of Rwanda, particularly concerning its alleged support for the M23 rebel group in eastern DRC.

Rwanda's government announced that it would cut diplomatic ties with Belgium effective immediately and ordered all Belgian diplomats to leave the country within 48 hours. Rwanda accused Belgium of consistently undermining its interests, especially in the context of the DRC conflict.

In response, Belgium's Foreign Minister, Maxime Prevot, described Rwanda's actions as "excessive" and stated that Belgium would reciprocate by declaring Rwandan diplomats persona non grata. Prevot noted that Rwanda tends to avoid dialogue when disagreements arise, which has contributed to the deterioration of relations between the two countries.

The conflict in eastern DRC has been a point of contention between Rwanda and Belgium. Rwanda is accused of backing the M23 rebels, which it denies, though it acknowledges having troops in the region.

Belgium, as a former colonial power in both Rwanda and the DRC, has been vocal in its criticism of Rwanda's actions in the region and has led calls for European sanctions against Kigali.

This diplomatic rift reflects broader tensions between Rwanda and Western nations over its involvement in the DRC conflict. Rwanda has accused Belgium of perpetuating "neocolonial delusions" and interfering in its affairs, while Belgium sees Rwanda's actions as destabilizing the region.

As African leaders continue to seek a lasting ceasefire in the DRC, the diplomatic fallout between Rwanda and Belgium adds another layer of complexity to regional efforts to resolve the conflict peacefully.
